For Major (Democratic and Republican) Parties

Hashtags#election #elections

The Democratic Party nomination will be awarded to whoever obtains a majority of the 3,769 pledged delegates to the July 13-16th Democratic National Convention in Milwaukee. In addition, 765 unpledged delegates not elected in any primary or caucus which equal 20% of the total elected delegates will effectively have the right to only vote at a contested convention (unlike in previous years, these “superdelegates” will not be able to vote on the first ballot in any meaningful way).

It is unlikely the GOP (Republican) Presidential primaries and caucuses will be remotely contested as long as Trump remains in office, though that would change quite dramatically if the incumbent President dies or is removed from office. Multiple Republican primaries and caucuses have been canceled by party officials, and Trump’s most prominent Republican challenger had exactly one reporter and zero unpaid supporters show up to his campaign kickoff.
