Linking to other websites helps search engines figure out what your own website is about (e.g., if your site has a lot of links to sites about marathons, 5Ks, etc., Google and other search engines will determine that your site is about the sport of running).

Also, SEO studies have shown that linking to authoritative sites (think Runner’s World to continue the above example) helps your site in the search engines (presumably because it shows that you’re a legit site).

Note that linking to Wikipedia articles is considered perfectly acceptable, though some readers might consider multiple links to the same site a bit lazy on your part.
