South Congress (abbreviated SoCo) is a neighborhood located on South Congress Avenue in Austin. It’s also a shopping and cultural district famous for its many eclectic small retailers, restaurants, art and music venues and, more recently, food trucks.
South Congress begins at the Congress Avenue Bridge on Town Lake and runs south toward Highway 71. The area is bordered by two historic South Austin neighborhoods: Travis Heights to the east and Bouldin Creek to the west.
Since its beginnings in the mid-1800s, South Congress has been transformed from a rural country road to the capital city gateway and, finally, to the vibrant shopping district that it is today. Many Austinites attribute its popularity to its views of the Texas State Capitol to the north.
